Nocera 1132 - Basic Impetus 2.0

Basic Impetus 2.0 to system, w który możemy odwzorować w miarę dobrze historyczne starcia armii, ktore nie są zbalansowane. Postanowiłem zebrać znane mi bitwy wczesnego średniowiecza rozpisać je jednostkami systemu. Oto pierwsza bitwa - Nocera. Położenie jednostek na mapie oraz elementy terenu przedstawiają zdjęcia. 

Bitwa była następstwem rebelii na południu Italii. Król Sycylii, Roger II odzyskał Amalfi i Neapol, ale siły buntowników zdołały się zebrać pod Beneventem. Przywódcami buntu byli książę Robert II z Kapui i Rajnulf  z Avellino. Roger wycofywał się w kierunku Salerno, pod drodze chcąc zdobyć zamek Nocera. Wojska rebeliantów naprawiły most na rzece Sarno i dotarły w okolice Nocery.  

Basic Impetus 2.0 is a system in which we can reproduce relatively well historical clashes of armies that are not balanced. I decided to describe the early medieval battles I known and write them down using units and statistics of the system. This is the first battle - Nocera. The location of the units and the elements of the terrain is presented in the photos. 

The battle followed a rebellion in southern Italy. King of Sicily, Roger II recaptured Amalfi and Naples, but rebel forces managed to rally at Benevent. The leaders of the rebellion were Prince Robert II of Capua and Ranulf of Avellino. Roger was retreating towards Salerno, on his way to capture castle of Nocera. The rebel troops repaired the bridge over the Sarno River and reached the vicinity of Nocera.

Król Roger, pewny przewagi, uformował swą armię w jedną wielką kolumnę, podzieloną na osiem hufców. Jazda stanęła na czele, następnie piesi Normanowie, Arabowie z Sycylii i łucznicy.

Siły Roberta stanowiły lewe skrzydło rebeliantów, uformowane w trzy hufce, stojące jeden za drugim. Jazda stanęła na czele i w trzecim hufcu, piechota zaś po środku. Rajnulf stanął na prawym skrzydle dowodząc siłami składającymi się tylko z jazdy.

King Roger, confident in his superiority, formed his army into one large column, divided into eight troops. The cavalry was in the lead, followed by the foot Normans, the Sicilian Arabs, and the archers. Robert's forces were the left-wing of the rebels, formed into three troops, standing one behind the other. The cavalry was at the forefront and in the third detachment, and the infantry in the middle. Ranulf stood on the starboard flank, commanding a cavalry-only force.

Przebieg bitwy

Roger II zaatakował główne siły Księcia Roberta. Jazda Roberta została odrzucona, piechota uległa częściowej panice i zaczęła uciekać. Pod uciekającymi załamał się most i wielu z nich utonęło. Jednakże część jazdy rebeliantów dowodzona przez Rajnulfa wykonała manewr na flankę jazdy Rogera rozpędzając ją. Zaatakowane z flanki dwa hufce uległy panice i pociągnęły za sobą resztę sił. Zwycięstwo okazało się całkowite. Król Roger uciekł do Salerno w towarzystwie zaledwie czterech rycerzy. Rebelianci wygrali, a bunt trwał jeszcze przez kilka lat.

Odtworzenie tej bitwy w systemie Basic Impetus 2.0 jest o tyle ciekawe, że silniejsza armia jest niekorzystnie uszykowana do bitwy, bo stoi w kolumnie. Armia słabsza ma możliwość zaatakowania z flanki. Hufce w Impetusie nie są zbytnio manewrowe, zmiana frontu jest niezwykle kłopotliwa i czasochłonna.

Roger II attacked the main forces of Prince Robert. Robert's cavalry was rejected, the infantry panicked and began to flee. The bridge collapsed under the escapees and many of them drowned. However, part of the rebel cavalry led by Rajnulf maneuvered to the flank of Roger's cavalry, forcing it to flee. Troops attacked from the flank panicked and dragged the rest of the forces with them. The victory turned out to be complete. King Roger escaped to Salerno with only four knights. The rebels won, and the revolt continued for several more years.  

Recreating this battle in the Basic Impetus 2.0 system is interesting because the stronger army is unfavorably prepared for the battle, because it stands in a column. The weaker army can attack from the flank. Impetus troops are not very maneuverable, changing the front is extremely troublesome and time-consuming.
