    1. Thank you. The genesis of the unit is very interesting. Instead of the planned legion (Bayonians' Legion) in August 1914 in Bayonne in France, they managed to establish a unit in the strength of the company (about 200 soldiers). Recruitment was suspended after a protest by the Russian embassy, which feared that the legion would fight for Poland's independence.

The company was directed to the front on October 22, 1914. The Bayonians fought against Germany on the Western Front in the battles fought in Champagne in 1914–1915. They served in the vicinity of Sillera from November 1914 to April 1915. Then they were directed to the city of Arras, where on May 9 they participated in the assault on the hill of Vimy near Neuville-Saint-Vaast. They mastered German positions, having gained success with heavy losses amounting to ¾ the state of the company.

After this period, only about 50 Bajonians remained alive, who after rest were directed to the region of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, where more soldiers died, and therefore the unit was dissolved in the summer of 1915. Their heroism has been documented to this day by the company banner with traces of 34 bullet holes, which is kept at the Polish Army Museum in Warsaw. The vast majority of those who survived joined the Polish Army organized since 1917 in France. In June 1918, the remains of the Bayonians were incorporated into the 1st Regiment of Polish Riflemen. In September 1919, after the incorporation the Blue Army to the Polish Army the regiment was renamed the 43rd Regiment of Frontier Shooters.
